OCALA, FL - The 2011 GAIG/USDF Region 3 Dressage Championships were a success for Jodie Kelly Dressage.  The event was held October 14 - 16 at HITS Post Time Farm in Ocala, FL.

Jodie Kelly and Manhattan
Awards from first to eighth place were awarded in each of the following divisions: Junior/Young Riders, Adult Amateurs and Open.  Division champions were awarded with championship coolers, jackets, saddle pads and baseball caps.

The HITS Post Time Farm featured five competition rings each with a very large warmup arena.  The grounds were beautiful.  The RV parking was very popular with competitors given the nearest hotels, restaurants and shops were 18 miles from the show grounds.

The DSDCTA hosted the Championships and assembled a team of fantastic volunteers, who helped make the competitions run smoothly in a relaxed, friendly and positive atmosphere.

The Competitors Party Saturday evening was organized by Laurie Kelly and Jodie Kelly Dressage.  Jodie was able to get a dozen or so farms and trainers to participate in the table decorating contest.  There were some very creative entries.  Those attending the party determined the winner of the contest by voting with their dollars.  The winner of the contest was Valhalla Farm.  Second place went to Gwen Poulan Dressage.  Sandy Bishop, former USDF Region 3 Director, generously donated a Passier Grand Gilbert saddle for the live auction.   The event raised nearly $800 for the Paws for Patriots program.

Jodie Kelly Dressage took twelve horses to the championships and brought home twenty-five ribbons.

Manhattan and Jodie captured the FEI Grand Prix and Grand Prix Freestyle Championships in the Open Division.  Jodie also captured two Reserve Championships; Intermediare I aboard Flash Forward and 1st Level with Stanley Holister.  She finished in 8th place in the Training Level Championships with Broadway and in 6th place in the 4th Level Championships with Vinkenhove Nelson.  Nelson also made his debut at Prix St Georges capturing 2nd place in the Open Division with a score of 64.737%.

Cindy Carpenter and Utrillo returned to the show ring after a 15-month break and captured three 2nd place ribbons in 2nd Level classes in the Adult Amateur Division; one of which was the pair's first qualifying score for next year's championships.  Utrillo foundered in both front feet in July 2010.  Utrillo and Cindy captured 8th place in the 2009 Region 3 Dressage Championships at 1st Level.  They were pursuing their second qualifying score for the 2010 championships at 2nd Level prior to Utrillo foundering.

Cindy attributes Utrillo's amazing recovery to three things; the excellent care he received at Auburn University's Large Animal Hospital during his four month stay, some really high quality shoeing from Daniel Jones, and a lot of luck.

Beth Godwin and Apalto captured 3rd place in the Championships at Training Level in the Adult Amateur Division.  Apalto was bred by Beth at her farm in Freeport, FL.

Lily Hall finished in 6th place in the Dressage Seat Equitation class aboard her new mount Feinbrand's Fantom.  Lily has only owned Feinbrand's Fantom for a couple of months so the other Jr/YR competitors should watch out for this pair once they have had a little more time together as a team.

Show Ring Ready

PREPARING FOR REGIONALS

Tammy Key and Jolie
Carol Dover and Duncan
Melissa McDonald and Feival
Kelly Chlebowski and Freistil
DESTIN, FL - This coming weekend is the GAIG/USDF Region 3 Dressaage Championships at the HITS Post Time Farm in Ocala, FL.  If you have ever participated in a hotly contested GAIG/USDF Region 3 DressageChampionships you know that nerve racking, nail biting, stomach churning, drama can attach itself to this event.  Everything is on the line!  It is go hard, have a good day or simply go home!

You can try down playing it by saying it is just another show.  That is until you get there and your regionals hopeful uncharacteristically spooks in the first class or somehow eludes judges favor with a score “lower than he/she has had all year”.  Even the most experienced athletes can come unglued.

Dealing with the pressure of a Regional Championship event comes down more to how you handle training preparation than how you approach the competition itself.  Vince Lombardi once said, "Dictionary is the only place that success comes before work. Hard work is the price we must pay for success.  I think you can accomplish anything if you're willing to pay the price."

Raine
Ladies Weekend at Southern Cross Equestrian Centre is usually a laid back event where horse and rider come to polish their skills, participate in crafts, relax with a massage, etc.  This year's event was no different, but since it was held the weekend before the Regional Championships and a month before the Blue Angel Dressage Show, the event had a horse show preparation theme.  Clients were getting show ring ready by running through tests with Jodie and fine tuning individual movements.

The victory gallop, used as part of the ribbon presentation for classes, might seem pretty simple when viewed from outside of the ring.  The horses all gallop around the ring in order of their placings and then go back to their stalls, right?  Well, that's not quite all there is to it.  There is some etiquette riders should be aware of before participating in their first victory gallop.  Jodie reviewed victory gallop etiquette with riders; being on time for awards, proper attire, order, passing, etc.

Saturday evenings "event" was a big group ride learning the do's and don'ts of the schooling ring and practicing victory gallops.  For many riders, the warm up at the horse shows is the most nerve racking part of showing.  It can be very intimidating for the unprepared.  So, riders practiced handling traffic in the schooling ring, reviewing the rules of the road, etc.

Jodie Kelly Dressage will be taking twelve horses to the championships.  These horses and their riders have spent all year preparing for this event.  Now it's their time to shine.   After all of your hard work and show preparation reward yourself with a fun and memorable show experience.

A final quote from Vince Lombardi, "Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.".

Okaloosa County Riders Score Big in State 4-H Championships

Lily Hall
Kelvin, Klarissa and Lily
NICEVILLE, FL - Three young people from Okaloosa County have returned from Tampa, Florida as winners of State level awards and two of them as State Champions.

Lily Hall (age 12), Klarissa Williamson (age 11) and Kelvin Williamson (age 13) all qualified to attend the 2011 Florida 4-H State Equestrian Finals this year by first winning Area A Championships in Marianna earlier in March.  After winning against riders from the entire Panhandle area (Escambia to Madison Counties) at the Area Finals, these three rode against the best riders in the state in a variety of events in both western and English classes and came home with top honors.

Klarissa and Kelvin Williamson, children of local veterinarian Dr. Reese Williamson and her husband Ken of Crestview, impressed the state judges in their western events.  Klarissa, riding her horse Oran Berry Ina, is State Grand Champion for Saddle Type & Gaited Horses, State Champion for Saddle Type & Gaited Mares, and placed 2nd in Road Hack Trotting (13 years and under), 4th in Saddle Seat Pleasure Trotting (13 and under), and 7th in Saddle Seat Equitation (13 and under).  Kelvin won Jr. Western High Point Championship for Area A, and placed 8th at State Championships in Halter Class for Stock Horse Mares on his horse, Fadjurs Shahbiz.

Lily Hall, daughter of Steve and Sherry Hall of Niceville, won the title of State Champion for Dressage (13 and under) riding her horse Heart of Gold.  She also won the State High Point Dressage award, competing against almost 60 other Jr. and Sr. Dressage class participants.  Lily is especially proud of her award because her dressage trainer, Jodie Kelly of Destin, won the same championship title when she was 12.

These young people and their families are all supporters and participants in Okaloosa County 4-H organizations, and are proud to be affiliated with Florida’s strong statewide 4-H equestrian program which produced almost 300 state qualified riders to compete for three days at the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa from July 7-9.

When asked for a comment, Lily said “We were all honored to be able to represent Okaloosa County and the whole Panhandle at State against all the south Florida riders.  It was important for us to bring these titles back home to make sure they don’t forget where the best riders in the State come from.”

Raising the American Dressage Standard

PENSACOLA, FL - The standard for American Dressage certainly went up over the weekend.  If you didn't attend the Blue Angel Dressage Show last weekend at the Escambia County Equestrian Center, you missed seeing some truly great performances.

There were 132 different rides over the two day event judged by Barbara Ebner (S) from Howell, NJ.  The passing or "adequate" score for a dressage test is 50%.  Scores in the 60's are very good; in the 70's or higher are exceptional.  The average score for all rides was 63.898% with the scores for seventy-three rides exceeding 60% proving the quality of the horses and riders at this year's show.  An amazing twenty-three rides had scores exceeding 70% with five of those scores topping the 80% mark.

Judge Ebner gave the show's highest score of 84.683% to Regina Milliken's ride aboard Riga in Training Level Test 2 of the Open Division.  Regina and Riga earned scores of 84.683%, 80.400%, 78.800%, and 76.667% at Training Level.  She and her second mount Carlos captured the show's First Level High Point award with a score of 77.742%.  This pair was also the picture of consistency with scores of 77.297%, 75.806% and 74.828% in the other First Level classes entered.

Martha Deasy-Little and Loretto captured the show's High Point award at Second Level.  Judge Ebner gave the pair a 68.333% for their performance of Test 3 in the Adult Amateur division.

Ann Hornbeak and Hello Dolly captured the Third and Fourth Level High Point awards with scores of 68.205% and 71.429% respectively.

The quality performances and excellent scores were not reserved only for the lower levels.  Emerald Coast Chapter Member, Jodie Kelly, posted scores of 77.750% for her FEI Grand Prix Freestyle and 68.511% in the FEI Grand Prix class capturing the FEI High Point award for the show aboard Manhattan.

Those reaching the elusive 80.00% mark were:
  • Beth Godwin and Apalto in Training Level, Test 3 Adult Amateur 80.000%
  • Regina Milliken and Riga in Training Level, Test 2 Open 84.643%
  • Regina Milliken and Riga in Training Level, Test 3 Open 80.400%
  • Jodie Kelly and Stanley Hollister in Training Level, Test 2 Open 82.500%
  • Jodie Kelly and Broadway in Training Level, Test 3 Open 80.800%
So if you want to see quality dressage horses and riders in Florida, you don't have to travel Ocala or Wellington anymore.  You can find them right here in the Florida Panhandle at the Blue Angel Dressage Show.  The Emerald Coast and Florabama Chapters of the DSDCTA host the Blue Angel Dressage Show twice a year at the Escambia County Equestrian Center; once in April and the second show in November.

Jodie Kelly Dressage Wins Classic Equine Stall And Tack Room Award At Wellington Classic Dressage Challenge II CDI

Jodie Kelly Dressage Sign
WELLINGTON, FL - Jodie Kelly’s Dressage Sport Horse Farm was pretty in pink during the Wellington Classic Dressage Challenge II CDI, and thanks to Kelly’s pink motif her farm took home the Classic Equine Stall and Tack Room Award.  Sponsored by Classic Equine Equipment, a nationally recognized leader in quality horse stall systems and stable accessories, the Classic Equine Stall and Tack Room Award is awarded at a variety of dressage and WEF shows during the Florida winter show season.

Kelly, an FEI rider and trainer who trains out of Southern Cross Equestrian Centre in Destin, Florida, was thrilled that her farm, which featured beautiful pink flower boxes and pink stall guards, won the Classic Equine Stall and Tack Room Award.  “I have been showing forever and my colors have always been pink and black,” Kelly said.  “I was an eventer for a while and I kept the same colors.  I went through a little phase where I thought I was too cool for pink, but not anymore.  Everything we have is pink!”

Kelly, who had 12 horses and five students in Wellington for the show, said her beautifully carved sign was given to her by clients Glenn and Cindy Carpenter.  “They gave me the sign for Christmas and we take it to all the horse shows with us,” she said.  The hanging signpost was the anchor of their decorative set up, complete with matching pink flowers and flower box.

Kelly is a USDF Bronze, Silver and Gold medalist and a graduate of the USDF Advanced Young Rider program.  She competed in the North American Young Riders Championships from 1998-2004 and in her first year of competition captured an individual Gold and brought home team Gold in three subsequent years.  Her impressive background includes training with Toine and Ingrid Hoefs and Anky van Grunsven.

Adam Busse, owner of Classic Equine Equipment, congratulated Jodie Kelly Dressage on winning the Classic Equine Stall and Tack Room Award.  “Jodie’s setup at the Wellington dressage show added a festive air to the show and you could see that her clients thoroughly enjoyed being at their home-away-from-home stabling area,” Busse said.  “We love recognizing the winner’s of the Classic Equine Stall and Tack Room Award and we love to be inspired by them.  Our products were developed in part through the observations and insight of countless horse owners.”

Where Did Winter Go?

Carol Dover and Decorated Debut
Jodie and Wencenza
VENICE, FL - Last Thursday, Jodie watched the temperature on the mirror of her truck go from 47° to 85° in one day just by driving from one end of Florida to the other on her way to the first horse show of 2011, The American Dressage Concours held at Fox Lea Farm in Venice, FL.

“While the rest of the country is plagued with snow and ice, I got a farmers tan today,” commented Jodie,  “Oh south Florida, how I have missed you!”

Allison Otter and Leonidas Van Pelt posted scores of 62.581% and 66.452% in First Level Test 3 classes in the Adult Amateur division finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively.  Both scores were qualifying scores for the 2011 Great American Insurance Group/USDF Regional Championships.

Carol Dover and Decorated Debut also earned qualifying scores at 3rd Level.  The pair claimed top honors in two of the three classes entered.  The judge awarded the pair's best effort a score of 64.872% in the Third Level Test 3 class on day 2 of the show.

Jodie captured top honors in four different classes aboard two different horses.  Venkenhove Nelson carried Jodie to three blue ribbons posting scores of 66.857%, 64.250% and 62.500% in the Open Division's 4th Level, Test 1 and Test 3 classes.

Jodie also rode the USEF Developing Horse Test for the FEI or Equivalent Test of Choice class aboard the 8-year-old mare Wencenza.  This test is for horses 7 to 9 years of age competing at the FEI Prix St Georges level.  This show was a qualifying event for the 2011 USEF National Developing Horse Dressage Championships.  Judge Marlene Schneider awarded Jodie and Wencenza a score of 70.000% and the top place in this class.

A minimum overall average of 62% must be maintained for consideration to the National Developing Horse Dressage Championships.  Only the horse & rider combinations ranked in the top 15 nationally will receive invitations to this Championship.  Jodie and Wencenza finished in the top 10 at the 2008 National Developing Horse Dressage Championships for 5-year-olds.

Wencenza is owned by Beth Godwin, who also returned to the show ring aboard Wencenza's brother, Apalto.  This was only Apalto's second venture into the Dressage show ring.  Beth and Apalto posted the high score for Jodie Kelly Dressage with their winning mark of 74.800% in the USDF Training Level Test 3 Class.

Jordan Fraser and Uroliet, another offspring from Beth Godwin's breeding program, made their second show appearance with scores of 66.071%, 66.250% and 63.600% at Training Level.  Jordan's lowest score, 63.600% for her performance in the Test 3 class, was still a qualifying score for the 2011 Regional Championships.

When asked about her group's performance Jodie commented, “I am so proud of my whole group.  The show got the 2011 show season for Jodie Kelly Dressage off to a great start.”

Every Cloud Has a Silver Lining

CONYERS, GA - Your truck breaks down pulling a horse trailer full of horses before you get to the show grounds.  After arriving at the show grounds you find out the camper plug is locked and there is no one to unlock it until tomorrow.  Then you find out one of your horse's entries was not verified and despite qualifying would not be allowed to participate in the Regional Championship class.

Not exactly what you would describe as a promising start to a show weekend.  But, every cloud has a silver lining.  Every optimist sees it that way.

The 2010 USDF Region 3 Championships turned into one of the best weekends in a long time for Jodie Kelly Dressage.  Jodie and her clients entered 20 different classes and came away with 19 ribbons.  Team Pink posted six scores above 70.000% on its way to finishing in the top three in 17 classes, capturing the blue ribbon 10 times, one Regional Championship, one Reserve Championship and finishing in the ribbons in every Championship class it entered.

Caroline Adams and her 7-yr old Dutch Warmblood, Uniek, captured the Jr/YR Championship at 1st Level with an outstanding score of 70.263% from the judges.   This pair went on to capture one first and two seconds for their performances in 2nd Level tests in the Open and Jr/YR divisions; setting the stage for next year's Regional Championships with a qualifying Test 4 score of 63.571%.

Mattie Zepernick and Nereide qualified for the Regional Championships in the Jr/YR Division in two levels; Training and First.  This duo was the Reserve Champions at Training Level with a score of 72.800%.  This was Team Pink's high score for the show.  Mattie and Nereide followed up that performance with a 3rd place finish in the Jr/YR Championship at 1st Level with a score of 68.421%.

Mattie also qualified for the Regional Championships in the Jr/YR Division at Training Level with her second mount, Amarula.  The pair finished 7th in the Championship class after being awarded a score of 68.400% by the judges.

Allison Otter and Leonidas Van Pelt finished 5th in the Training Level Championships for the Adult Amateur Division posting a score of 68.000%.  They followed that performance with first place finishes in First Level, Test 1 and 2 classes in the Adult Amateur division of the open show with scores of 70.333% and 69.444% respectively.

Carol Dover and Decorated Debut won the top honors in the Third Level, Test 3 Class in both the Adult Amateur and Open Divisions.  In addition to the two wins Carol also earned her first qualifying score for 2011 when the judges awarded her a 64.186% for their performance in the Open Division.

Since they could not participate in the Championships for which they had qualified, Jodie and Venkenhove Nelson made it known they were a force to be reckoned with in the future by posting a score of 70.000% in the Open Show's 4th Level, Test 1 Class of the Open Division capturing another blue ribbon for Team Pink.

Jodie and Wencenza dominated the Open Division's Prix St Georges class capturing the top spot with a score of 70.263%.  This was Wencenza's first Prix St Georges class.

"I am so, so, so proud of my whole group," commented Jodie.  "It was a very successful Regional Championships for Jodie Kelly Dressage."
