Team PINK Represents at USDF Year End Awards Gala

Team PINK at Convention
Awards
St Louis, MO - Every year, thousands of owners and riders with USDF registered horses compete for USDF awards and the opportunity to find out where their horse ranks against others competing at that level nationwide.   As part of its mission, USDF offers a variety of award programs to recognize achievement in dressage and dressage sport horse breeding (DSHB).  In the USDF awards system, there is a goal for nearly every type and level of riding, starting with the USDF Rider Performance Award for achievement at Training Level, on up to the Adequan®USDF Grand Prix Horse of the Year.  In between are the popular USDF Rider Medals (gold, silver, and bronze), Adequan®/USDF All-Breeds Awards, and many more.

A huge congratulations to Amanda Stewart, Mimi Mallory, Kimmie Taylor and Carol Barnes Dover who ALL received national awards at the prestigious USDF Salute Gala and Annual Awards Banquet.  Amanda Stewart earned her Bronze and Silver medals in 2016.  For a Bronze Medal, the rider needs two scores over 60% in each First, Second and Third Levels.  For a Silver Medal, the rider needs two scores over 60% in Fourth Level and Prix St Georges (PSG).

Mimi Mallory and Won Direction were tops in the Adequan®/USDF All-Breeds Awards for Junior/Young Rider at 2nd Level showing a KWPN horse.  Mimi and Won Direction finished the season with a median score of 64.817%.   Mimi and Won Direction were also Reserve Champions in the Adequan®/USDF All-Breeds Awards for Junior/Young Rider at 1st Level showing a KWPN horse with a median score of 65.000%.

2016 was a great year for Kimmie Taylor and Zydeco ZSH.  The pair were awarded top honors in the Adequan®/USDF All-Breeds Awards for Adult Amateurs at 2nd Level showing a KWPN of North America horse.  Their median score of 69.085% for the year was also good enough to place them 3rd among all Adult Amateurs competing at 2nd Level and declaring for the Vintage Cup.  Kimie and Zydeco ZSH also finished in the 7th position among all Adult Amatuer Dover National Merit Winners with median score of 70.284%.

Carol Dover's Shirocco was the Adequan®/USDF Horse of the Year at 2nd Level.  With Jodie aboard, the pair finished the season with a median score of 75.015%. This median score also finished Jodie and Shirocco as Champions in the Open Division for all American Rhineland Studbook horses.  Carol and Shirocco were Reserve Champions in the same division at 1st Level with a median score of 64.118%.  Carol also finished in the top 35 for Vintage Cup riders competing at 1st Level.

Jodie and Beth Godwin's Caymus posted a median score for 2016 of 74.872% at 3rd Level which finished Jodie and Caymus as Champions in the Open Division for all KWPN horses.  Caymus was fished as Reserve Champion for the Adequan®/USDF Horse of the Year at 3rd Level.

"I am so proud and honored to stand by your side tonight, but more importantly by the ring for so many hours.  It's fun to see the blood, sweat and tears pay off," commented Jodie.

It's Official

Hannah, Jodie and Josh
Jodie Kelly
Destin, FL - Everyone anticipated the Jodie Kelly/Josh Baxley wedding was going to be one for the ages and it definately was.

It was a glamourous affair held at the beautiful home of Stephanie and Douglas Geary overlooking Indian Bayou.  Finding somewhere that can host a 65-foot charter boat, a horse, and 200+ people was no easy feat.  The family's generosity enabled the wedding to be everything Jodie had ever dreamed of.   To top it off, as truly the perfect place, the Geary's home is on Mattie's Way inside of Kelly Plantation. Before being developed, the land was originally owned by Mattie Kelly, Jodie's dad's grandmother.  Getting married at special friends' home, on what used to be family land, is as unique as it comes.

Of course there was a horse in attendance; Manhattan.  While horses are Jodie's passion and her profession, this was not just a "token horse" to have at the wedding.  Jodie and Manhattan's story began almost 20 years ago.  The two have grown up as partners in crime.  "I feel incredibly blessed to have found a man that respects and supports my career and goals as much as Josh does," said Jodie.

A string orchestra provided the ambiance along with crystal chandeliers adorning almost every tree.  The day ended with an epic dance party.

"From the weather, to the people involved, to my beloved animals, magical is the main word that comes to mind," Jodie stated.

Flood Relief Update

Destin, FL - I am BLOWN AWAY by the generosity and outpouring of help.  The donations continue to roll in.

Before sending more hay, I touched base with my contact I have at Lamar Dixon Expo Center to see if there is something that our money could be better spent on, as the hay desperation is calming some.  She said what they actually need even more than hay at this moment is shavings.  They have 300-400 horses and cows all stalled, and they are starting to have problems with their feet from having been in flood waters.  I told her I had a great Sun Coast shavings contact and would work on them getting a truck load.  And then, this is when you know your efforts are appreciated.  She cried.   She called me an angel through her tears and thanked me.  I only wish each and every one of you that wrote a check could have heard her.

These poor people are hot and exhausted.  But, piece by piece, we can make a small difference.

Thank you all.

Ready, Set, GO!

Destin, FL - Thousands of residents have been displaced by historic flooding in Louisiana since rain began to fall last week; some areas around Baton Rouge received over 24 inches of rain.  In some locations, waters rose so quickly that residents had time to do little more than flee, let alone pack belongings or make arrangements for their animals.

I have to take a moment to brag about my amazing team.  Yesterday, at about lunch time, I sent them all this text:

"Ok team!!!! I'm counting on ya'll.  My heart has been breaking for the people of Louisiana.  I know so many need help, but the animals is where it is for me.  The Lamar Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales, has over 300 horses and almost 200 cows there.  They are in desperate need of hay.  One of the barns that went there was "high and dry" and considered safe, and then within 2 hours, had 8 feet of water in it... TWO HOURS!!!!  It takes us TWO DAYS to evacuate for a hurricane.  I'd like to do something that will truly make an impact.  I've spoken with our round bale guy, and he's willing and able to deliver an entire load over there, 30 bales.  Which is equivalent to 500-600 square bales.  The cost for that is $4,000.  There are also 6 horses that need serious care, that were abuse cases originally and now flood victims.  These horses have been through hell.  One was ridden twelve miles yesterday to escape the flood, but wasn't even healthy enough to be ridden to begin with.

Laurie Hood can take these six at Alaqua Animal Refuge and we found a shipper.  We donated a chunk towards it, but the difference is $1,500 to get these guys safely to Alaqua.  It is rare that I ask these things, but, I'd like to try to come up with $5,500 from JKD today, for hay to the evacuees and to get the poor horses to Alaqua.  Let me know what everyone is willing and able to donate.  Hay guy can go tomorrow, so we will pay him up front, anything I raise over will go straight to the flood victims!  Ready, set, go!!!"

Today I am proud to say, we reached our goal, plus a little.  So, there will be 30,000 lbs of hay pulling into Lamar Dixon tomorrow morning, on behalf of JKD, its clients and friends.  And the poor six horses will arrive at Alaqua tomorrow night.  We will be there to help get them settled.

In the big scheme of things, in this awful disaster, this is a very small dent, but, if everyone makes a small dent, it eventually makes a big dent!  I'd love to send another load again soon!

If you'd like to contribute, touch base with me, or go straight to the Alaqua Animal Refuge website.

She Hasn't Grown Much in Size, But Has Grown in Every Other Way

Destin, FL - I was away on the actual day, but I would be remiss to not mention Elizabeth Zecca's two year anniversary with Jodie Kelly Dressage.

Two years ago, this kid badgered me for an entire summer about a position that was not open.  I finally caved and we welcomed Eizabeth Zecca into our barn family on August 1st.  A green working student that could barely keep our school masters together, she vowed then and there that she'd never make me regret hiring her.  She has not only kept that word, but makes me thank my lucky stars daily for her not taking no for an answer.

Although she hasn't grown much in size, love you EZ, she has grown in every other way possible.  From her riding skills, to her equine management skills, to being a mentor to so many of our young riders, she has made herself an invaluable member of this team.  It has truly been a joy to watch her blossom.

Happy anniversary, Elizabeth!  Here's to many more!

What More Could a Trainer Ask For

Lexington, KY - Mattie Zepernick and Wencenca finished 5th in the Young Rider freestyles last night.  They started off the week as the anchor ride for the Region 9 team, then, steadily progressed individually, right into the victory gallop last night.

As this week comes to a close, and I am sitting here waiting for my flight, I can't help but remember where we were two years ago, at this time.  On Freestyle Saturday of the 2013 NAJYRC, instead of fighting for scores, where she should have been, Wencenza found herself fighting for her life, across the street at Hagyard.  Another surgery, and two years later, this special mare was headed back down centerline of the Rolex Stadium last night, dancing her way to the victory gallop.

Mattie and Wencenza posted a score of 65.974% on Wednesday in the FEI Young Rider Team test, finishing 12th out of 35 competitors.  Mattie and Wencenza ventured into the Rolex Arena for the first time on Friday for the FEI Young Rider Individual test.  They moved up three spots from their finish in the Team Test finishing in 9th place with a 65.947% score.  Then it was back to the Rolex Arena on Saturday night for the finale and the FEI Young Rider Freestyle competition.  Mattie and Wencenz were awarded a score of 68.450% by the judges, placing them 5th on the night.

I am continuously in awe and humbled by the heart and soul this amazing girl has.  And so very happy that she has such a team behind her that will fight as hard as she does when the going gets tough.  No doubt in my mind, her drive comes from the desire to fulfill one very special kids' dreams that she gets to call "hers".  The judges only get to judge what they see for seven minutes, but, if they could see the love, sacrifice, and bond that these two have outside the ring, they would have Gold medals that challenged the most decorated Olympians.  THAT is what this sport is truly about.

The Adequan/FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championships presented by Gotham North (NAJYRC) is the premier equestrian competition for junior and young riders, age 14-21.  Young equestrians vie for team and individual FEI medals in three Olympic equestrian disciplines of show jumping, dressage, eventing, the Para-Olympic discipline of para-dressage and the FEI World Equestrian Games disciplines of reining and endurance.  The competition is run under rules of the FEI, the international governing body for equestrian sport, and is the only FEI championship held annually on this continent.

Many of North American's best equestrians who now regularly represent their country on Olympic Word Championship and Nations Cup teams got their first taste of International experience at NAJYRC.   These include Olympic medalists Greg Best, Karen O'Connor, Chris Kappler and McLain Ward.  The list also includes Mattie's trainer.

What more could a trainer ask for?  Love these two to pieces!

He's Like Judging an Ice Cream Sundae

HAMILTON, GA - Jodie Kelly Dressage sent twenty-one rides down centerline at the Chattahoochee Hills Equestrian Center this weekend.  It was a busy one, but so worth the exhaustion.  Jodie was very proud of the team and everyone who showed, despite the miserably hot temperatures.  "We had some great moments, some better off forgotten, and then some when all you can do is laugh." said Jodie.  "I am so proud of this team, through the ups and the downs, this gang sticks together."

Jodie captured top honors in six different classes aboard two different horses.  Jodie and Shirocco captured top honors on Saturday with scores of 73.333% in the First Level, Test 1 class and 70.306% in the First Level, Test 2 class.  They followed those performances with a 72.206% score in the First Level, Test 3 class on Sunday.  Shirocco is owned by Carol Dover who was sidelined with a knee injury for this show.

Amanda Stewert and Heza High Expectation were the winners in the Second Level, Test 3 class for Jr/YRs with a score of 59.512% and placed 3rd in the Third Level, Test 3 class with a score of 62.949% on Saturday.  This partnership competed in the same classes on Sunday eclipsing all other competitors in the Third Level, Test 3 class and finished 2nd in the Second Level, Test 3 class.

Annlouise Kildow and Graf Kaspian captured 2nd place in both the Training Level, Test 2 and Test 3 classes in the Adult Amateur Division on Saturday with scores of 66.923% and 68.864% respectively.   Annlouise and Graf returned to the ring on Sunday to win the same two classes with scores of 70.000% and 68.182% respectively.
